*********** 052493A.ENV *********** Country: Russia From: Vladivostok News No. 6, p. 3 13 May 1993 KEYWORDS: Russia, Ocean Dumping, Radioactive waste If you don't think the Cold War is over, please read Msg. B which is an article from the Vladivostok News on the dumping by the Soviet Navy of nuclear waste in the Sea of Japan and elsewhere. The paper, in English, only started in March and looks as if it was printed by Ben Franklin, consisting of just four pages, or a regular sheet of newsprint folded. The circulation is listed as 1000. The article includes a map of the dump sites which, of course, can't be transmitted here from the Japanese paper Asahi Shimbun. It is interesting also, especially for the Editor's note at the end commenting on secrecy. I watched the Berlin Wall come down, but to see such a paper in Vladivostok is just as dramatic evidence of the end of the Soviet era. By the way, this issue was handed out on the Aeroflot flight from Niigata to Vladivostok. The desert on the return flight was a Mars Bar!! ************** END Msg. A.ENV **************
