S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for cooperation in marine observation. President Ishizuka of JAMSTEC and President E.N.Barnard of PMEL signed on that day their names to the memorandum at the PMEL in Seattle, Washington. The memorandum is a part of the Pacific Integrated Observation Initiatives agreed to by Japan and the US last May. The both organizations will cooperate in the following fields: (1) Monitoring of ocean and atmosphere; (2) Data management; (3) Research on ocean and atmosphere. Specifically, setting and retrieval of buoys and observation data processing will be conducted jointlv, and the data possessed in common. The memorandum is valid for 5 years. PMEL is a laboratory belonging to NOAA and is a central organization for marine observation in the Pacific in parallel with Scripps Marine Laboratory of the University of California.
