*********** 080594A.ENV *********** Contributory Category: SHP Country: Hong Kong From: South China Morning Post 28 July 1994 p. 3 KEYWORDS: Hong Kong; Green World World Expo '94, Harbor pollution +++++ Several items relating to environmental protection in Hong Kong. First, the head of the Chinese Environmental Protection Agency will visit Hong Kong and speak at the Green World Expo, which is being held in Hong Kong 12-14 August 1994 sponsored by the Friends of the Earth (a Sierra Club spin-off). Some of his meetings will be about Hong Kong's dumping of partially treated sewage into the South China Sea, which needs China's approval. As a sidebar to the main article is a piece on the problems of floating rubbish in Hong Kong harbor. This is real, as our jetfoil on a visit to Macao hit a piece of flotsam in the Pearl Esturary and had to stop for inspection. Of course, this could have been flood debris coming from the heavy Monsoon rains hitting South China. In any case, harbor debris is a problem for any shipping especially those travelling at high speed. ************** END Msg. A.ENV **************
